Freshness, Purity Crucial to Effective Fish Oil

The Danger of Oxidized Oil.

Fishy smell? Fishy taste? Fishy burps? These are the signs of oxidized, and most likely rancid, fish oil. Not only is this unpleasant, it’s also not good for you. The consumption of oxidized fatty acids has been shown to contribute to negative health outcomes—such as free radical formation and increased susceptibility to oxidative damage to tissues. Oxidized fish is not absorbed as well by the body, and, therefore, does not reliably deliver the health benefits you’re looking for.

Why is Some Fish Oil Oxidized?

Oxygen is the enemy of freshness. Fish oils are highly susceptible to degradation if handled improperly during manufacturing and storage. So it’s critical to avoid oxygen during fish oil production. Unfortunately, many manufacturers do not adequately protect these delicate oils from oxygen.

How is Fish Oil Freshness Measured?

Fish oil freshness is the absence of rancidity, and is measured by total oxidation (TOTOX) value. The lower the TOTOX number, the fresher the fish oil, and the likelier your body will respond positively to your omega-3 supplement.*

The only way to accurately assess fish oil freshness is through testing. Nordic Naturals tests TOTOX levels repeatedly throughout our proprietary, oxygen-free manufacturing process in order to measure and ensure exceptional freshness levels. When it was discovered that traditional oxidative tests delivered false positive results for rancidity on flavoured oils, we partnered with leading research organization Nutrasource Diagnostics to develop groundbreaking testing methodology in order to properly analyze freshness levels in flavoured omega-3 oils.

In addition, every batch of fish oil is third-party tested to verify our leading purity levels, based on the toxicity equivalent testing methodology established by the World Health Organization. We offer transparent access to our Certificates of Analysis, which prove that we deliver safe and effective products.

We also recommend the tried and true human taste test. Smell it. Sip it. Bite into your soft gel. Trust your senses. If it tastes and smells fishy, forget it.

Boat-to-Bottle Management Ensures Fresh Fish Oil

The benefit of making our own oil is that we manage every step of the manufacturing process, from boat to bottle. This allows us to produce omega-3 fish oils that are exceptionally fresh.

In order to avoid exposure to oxygen, Nordic Naturals uses nitrogen during every step of manufacturing. The importance of this cannot be overstated. Only by using nitrogen can fish oil be protected from oxidative rancidity. Our oxygen-free manufacturing process allows us to deliver leading freshness levels. This may explain why so many people who did not previously benefit from fish oil report extraordinary results when using Nordic Naturals products.

Nordic Naturals boat-to-bottle management is unique. Many companies leave the manufacturing—and the quality control—to someone else. Some don’t even know the freshness values of their oils. Remember, fish oil that is not fresh will not be effective. It could even be harmful to your health. That’s why it’s critical to do your homework before choosing a fish oil brand.

How to Choose a Safe and Effective Fish Oil Supplement

Fresh = Effective—Responsible fish oil manufacturers test their products, and make these test results available to customers. Be sure to choose a fish oil product that meets or surpasses the quality standards set by organizations like WHO (World Health Organization), CRN (Council for Responsible Nutrition), and IFOS (International Fish Oil Standards).

Purity Is Essential—Mercury, arsenic, lead, dioxins, and PCBs are just a few of the contaminants that must be avoided in quantities harmful to humans. While all fish bio-accumulate some amount of these toxins, some fish oil brands are better at purifying their oils than others.

Fresh Means Effective—Rancid (oxidized) fish oil is not healthy for the body, and is the cause of the fishy smell, taste, and burps that have turned many people off of omega-3 fish oil. Freshness of fish oil is the absence of rancidity, and is measured by total oxidation (TOTOX) value.

The lower the TOTOX number, the fresher the fish oil, and the likelier your body will respond positively to your omega-3 supplement.*

The Triglyceride Form for Better Absorption—Triglycerides are the most common molecular form in which dietary fats enter the body, and they are the same form in which omega-3 fats naturally exist in fish.

Omega-3 products in the triglyceride form are better absorbed than ethyl ester omegas—up to 70% better!† Unfortunately, many fish oil companies skip important steps during manufacturing and leave their omega-3 products as ethyl esters.

At Nordic Naturals we always have, and always will, produce our omegas in the superior triglyceride form.

Three Important Reasons To Take Omega-3 Fish Oil

#1: Thousands of Studies Say Omega-3s Support Health
There is overwhelming evidence that fish oil is good for you! Over 8,000 clinical studies have been conducted on omega-3s, confirming their many health benefits. Among these benefits are: normal cardiovascular and brain function, mood support, healthy joints, skin, eyes, immunity, and nervous system function.*

Omega-3s have also been shown to support a healthy pregnancy and are especially important for proper brain, eye, and nervous system development in young children.*

#3: Food Is No Longer Enough!
The amount of omega fatty acids in the typical American diet changed tremendously in the 20th century, with major increases in omega-6, thanks to refined seed oils and grain-fed meats, and major decreases in omega-3 as people eat fewer wild fish, and fewer naturally grown foods.

For millennia, omega fats were eaten in a generally balanced ratio. No longer. It is now highly unlikely that a person can get balanced omega nutrition from diet alone. Supplemental omega-3 is necessary for most of us.
